Information for authors

You are kindly invited to participate in the next Seventh International Conference on Occupational Risk Prevention ORP’2009, which is going to be held at Santiago de Chile on November 24th, 25th and 26th, 2009. This relevant event looks forward for establish a scientific and technical gathering from the diverse disciplines that configures the science of Occupational Health and Safety.

The objective of ORP Conferences is to create and establish an international forum for the information exchange about the most relevant advances on methods, trends, tools and projects in the areas of ergonomics, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine and epidemiology, psychosociology, occupational risk prevention management and other similar disciplines.

Organization

The organization of the scientific activities, the selection process for papers and the slection criteria for the assurance of relevance and quality is the responsability of the Scientific Committee, which is formed by relevant scientists and practitioners coming from the different considered working areas. This Conference will hold several activities designed to suit the necessities of the assistants in order to accomplish the objective of reach effective information Exchange and the establishment of international fórums. The Communications modality is the only open for general public. If you wish to propose a specific issue or research in order to be presented in a different way, please contact the Technical Secretariat in order to allow us to evaluate it.

1. Communications: 
These are brief presentations made in the form of a paper which eventually will be presented orally in the open sessions. Authors interested in participating are invited to send original works related with any of the conference’s fields. These papers will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee, which will select the best among them in order to the public sessions. One of these will be awarded with the Eugeion Heiremans prize on Occupational Health and Safety.

2. Workshops: 
These are technical activities exposed by specialists in a specific field. Assistants may observe and learn applied methodologies and tools related with Occupational Health and Safety. Workshops are designed for professionals interested in the application of these techniques in day-by-day problems.

3. Meeting Points: 
These are informal and moderated open sessions, designed for specialists in order to discuss about a specific issue, experience interchange and/or to promote new ideas and projects. The result of each activity will be published as an Executive Briefing at the organizers’ will.

4. Plennary Conferences: 
Formal presentations offered at the Conference Plennary by international experts specifically invited.

Those papers correctly presented in time and having passed the correspondent selection, edition and revision processes, will be published in the Conference Proceedings:

It is very important to remind you that Technical Secretariat will only accept abstracs and papers correctly delivered in time. This is why we specifically recommend you to carefully follow the instructions exposed below.

Articles and Abstracts Making Instructions

NOTICE

  • Not fulfilling dates or formats may mean the rejection of your paper in the selection process and its exclusión from the Conference Proceedings. Please read the following instructions carefully.
  • After sending your abstract, an ID number will be assigned. This number is the only way to quickly locate your work and its status. Please have it ready in any case you need to contact us.
  • Abstracts must be sent electronically using the form you will find at this site. Previous author’s registration is needed just for identification purposes (this stage of registration is free of charge). The reception of abstracts sent by other mechanisms is not guaranteed.
  • We will publish and update a Frequent Asked Question section. There you may find the answer of the most common issues asked to the secretariat. You are kindly invited to visit it if you have a question on the making of your article.

  • Languages:
    • Official Conference’s languages are Enlgish and Spanish. You may send abstracts and/or full papers in any of these languages.

    Procedure:
    • In order to clearly inform you about the different stages of the selection, edition and publication process of contributions to the Conference, the following table details them with the estimated dates for its accomplishement.

    7. Technical Secretariat reviews and edits received papers. It delivers them to the Scientific Committee for peer review June, 2nd to September, 12nd, 2009
    8. Scientific Committee evaluates full papers and qualifies them for acceptance or rejection. It delivers the decision to the Technical Secretariat May, 2nd to October 1st, 2009
    9. Technical Secretariat informs authors about the result of the selection process October 13th, 2009
    10. Technical Secretariat releases the program for communications following quality and physical space criteria October, 14th to 18th, 2009
    11. Technical Secretariat informs authors about the presentations programme October 20th, 2009

    Abstract

    The abstract is a synthesis which briefly explains the presented work, showing its main objectives, the methodology used and the main conclusions reached.

    Abstracts should be sent through the electronic form presented in this website. The reception of abstracts sent by other means is not guaranteed.

    At this step you will be asked for registration. This is free of charge and is asked just for identification and relation means. We guarantee the effective protection of your personal information.

    Abstract must have the following information:
    • Title and authors: Clearly specify the authors' names, and their contact data. Include their phone numbers and e-mail as well
    • Main Author: Please specify the main author for the article. This is the person wich will be in formal contact with the Technical Secretariat and the research team associated. In case that the author is a single person, he/she will be considered as the main author. It is very important to correctly register the e-mail address for it is the only contact mechanism with the technical secretariat
    • Content: Write down a brief text over the objectives of the research, the justification for its development, methodology, main results and the contributions for the scientific knowledge or its application
    • Keiwords: Single words that identify the main theme of the article. Maximum five (5)
    • Extension: Up to 500 words
      As a general rule, abstracts should be written in a clear and direct language. It is recommended that they expose a brief introduction of the issue involved and to explicitly show the main reached conclusions and the used methodology.


    Full Paper

    General
    • There is no limit over the number of pages for the article, but you are kindly requested to keep in mind that you should send a scientific article. During the selection process, the synthesis and clarity of the received articles will be evaluated


    Fonts and Styles

    • Normal Text: Use the font type Verdana.
    • Titles and authoring: The title (Verdana, 18 points, black), the authors' names and lastname (Verdana, 10 points, black) and their addresses (Verdana, 10 points) must be written from the left margin and page-wide. Please write a contact phone number and the email for each author.
    • Headings: Title in verdana, 10 points, black style in  white color over gray background, uppercase.
    • References and cites: Please always write the references following this instructions: A number between brackets [1] on the text, and its correspondent reference at the end of the document (see the example). Only published and publicly accessible documents should be referenced. There may be internal reports and other kind of documents when they could be easily requested by the reader. In this case, please write down a reference address. We recommend the use of bibliographic referring software EndNote. In the next paragraph, you could find the respective instructions.
    • Page numbering: Do not write down page numbers, neither page headings nor footnotes.

    Reference Styles The use of reference management such as EndNote or Refworks is recommended. They simplfy the edition and redaction processes and allow to fully apply publications styles such as the one here requested.

    Abstract and Keywords
    • The article should begin with an abstract of about 100 words. The abstract is a brief explanation of the article, exposing the investigated problem, the research method and its main results. Following to this, there shall be mentioned a set of words that better describe it for searching and indexing purposes.


    Paragraph and Section composition

    • Paragraph titles shall be written in Verdana, 10 points, bold style and with the first letter in uppercase.
    • Subparagraph titles shall be written in Verdana, 10 points, cursive y and with the first letter in uppercase.
    • The titles of each section shall be written in Verdana, 10 points, bold style and uppercase. Please do not number them.
    • White spaces before each section must be in Verdana, 20 points. The spaces between paragraphs should be in Verdana, 10 points.
    • All the elements of the document (text and exhibits) must fit within a rectangle of 15 cm x 25,7 cm, centered on a A4 sheet (21 cm x 29,7 cm). Margins are the following:
      • Upper margin: 2 cm
      • Lower margin: 2 cm
      • Left margin: 3 cm
      • Right margin: 3 cm 
    • On the pages following the first one, begin your writing on the first line, caring not to leave any empty space between the upper margin and the text. All the text should be justified between the right and left margins.

    Style and Content
    • Please write to an international public, and observe this recommendations:
      • Use a direct and easily comprehensible style.
      • Briefly explain the technical terms you are using on your document.
      • Declare the meaning of the abbreviations when they are used for the first time on the document. For example, “UK (United Kingdom)”
      • Declare the use of the symbols, including the dating system used. Remember that they change from one country to another. For example, "1-5-99" or "5-1-99" could mean January, the fifth, or May, the first; $ may indicate dollars, pesos, as well as another currency.
    • Insert your schemes and illustrations along the text while you are referring them. Insert a title in Verdana, 8 points, on each one of them. Please use low-resolution images as possible.
    • If you use tables, please be sure that they are not inserted directly with its data as well. This is often the reason why documents exceed storage size and make difficult its delivery.

    Tables
    • It is recommended the use of simple tables, with a moderate use of color. The content will fit the Verdana typeset.
    • It is also recommended to be specially careful when copying tables, because this process usually copy all the data from it was built as well. Try to insert it as an image or using another copying method.

    Images and pictures
    • It is recommended the use of images at medium and low resolutions (not bigger than 600 dpi), or web optimized (72 dpi), and the use of standard formats as JPEG, GIF, TIFF or BMP.
    • Image size will always fit the publication's. In case that it is strictly necessary to add images bigger than that, they must be included as annexes to the article, and presented on independent archives clearly specified.

    Template
    Bibliographic References
    • References should be written single-spaced and alphabetically ordered, under the heading "References", beginning in a separated page and at the end of the document. References should be referred only to the material actually used and presented within the text.
       
    • Please do not abbreviate journal or magazine names.
       
    • Authors are responsible for the content of the presented papers and, therefore, the use of material that is not accessible to general public (unpublished theses, working papers, experimental data, etc.) should be limited at the strictly essential level.
       
    • The reference styling is based on the style recommended by Harvard at the "Style Manual for Authors, Editors and Printers", published by Wiley in 2002. Some citing examples are the following:
